The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration defines a fortified food as any food, which has been added substances with nutritious or physiological function such as vitamins, minerals or other nutrients. Fortified beverages can thus be described as any type of water, which has been added a functional benefits in addition to being hydrating. A fortified beverage could be a carbonated water infused with vitamins, amino acids, sweetened and flavoured.

Some Member States, including Denmark, has national legislation for use of vitamins, minerals and certain other substances, that are added to food.
